Practice
Description
1. Land Preparation
a. Pre sowing Irrigation
Required
b. Tillage
One deep ploughing with MB plough followed by 2-3 ploughing with harrow cultivator or desi plough followed by planking
2. Variety
Select best according to area.
3. Sowing time
Last week of sept to first fort night of october.
4. Seed rate
5kg per hectare
5. Seed treatment
1kg seed with 2.5gms Thirum.
6. Method of sowing
a. Fertilizer application
i. Unirrigated
40kg nitrogen, 20kg phosphate and 20kg potash.
ii. Irrigated
40kg nitrogen, 30kg phosphate and 40kg potash.
b. Sowing
Sow behind the plough by keeping 45cm. Row to row distance and 4-5cm. seed depth. To cover the seed do light planking.
7. Interculture
a. Thinning
Within 15-20 days of sowing remove plants from dense areas keeping 15 cm plant to plant distance. Remove all the weeds.
b. Weed control
i. Chemical control
  • Spray 2.2 lit fluchlorolin 45 EC mixed with 800lit of water per hectare. After spraying mix the top soil by hoeing.
  • Or
  • Spray 3.3lit pendimithilene 30EC mixed in 800-1000 lit of water per ha just after sowing.
ii. Mannual control
First interculture operation before irrigation and 2nd 10days after 1st irrigation should be done
8. Crop protection
As required
9. Irrigation
First irrigation 25 to 30 days after sowing second irrigation 50 to 55 days after sowing.
10. Harvesting & Threshing
  • When 75percent pods turn golden yellow harvest the crop.
  • Thresh the crop after drying
11. Remarks
  • To control white rust and powdery mildew treat 1kg with 1.5gms metalaxyl.
  • Broadcast balance nitrogen after first irrigation.
  • By using single super phosphate 12% sulphur is supplied.
  • If D.A.P is used 100kg per ha gypsum should be used along with this.
  • If only one irrigation is available then irrigate 30 days after sowing.
  • In hill areas right sowing time is second fortnight of September.

Per kg seed with 2.5 grow Thirum of on perkg seed with 5gms of Mancojeb
6. Method of sowing
a. Fertilizer application
i. Unirrigated
40kg nitrogen, 20kg phosphate`
ii. Irrigated
45kg nitrogen, 30kg phosphate
b. Sowing
Sow behind the plough by keeping 30cm. Row to row distance and 3-4cm. Depth of the seed. To cover the seed light planking should be done.
7. Intercultural
a. Chemical weed control
Spray immediately after sowing 3.3. lit pendimethylene 30EC in 800 to 1000 lit water per hectare.
b. Thinning
Within 15 days of sowing remove dense plants maintaining 10 to 15cm. Plant to plant distance. Remove all the weeds.
8. Crop protection

  • Irrigate twice first at flowering stage and second at grain filling stage.
  • If only one irrigation is available irrigate crop 25 days after sowing.
10.Harvesting & Threshing
  • When 75percent pods turn golden colour harvest the crop.
  • After drying thoroughly thresh the crop.
11. Remarks
  • To control white rust and powdery mildew treat 1kg seed with 1.5 gms metalaxyl.
  • Use of phosphorous as single super phosphate is more beneficial because it has 12 percent sulphur.
  • In irrigated crop use balanced nitrogen at the time of first irrigation.
